Preparing the Trailer Platform for long travel

By cbatstone, August 7, 2013

I took a trip to Wolfeboro this week in early August to spend three evenings working on my road trip trailer with my dad at his garage.  The trailer I am using is a 10′ single snowmobile trailer that is fairly new.  The previous owner had installed upgraded wheels and tires so it rolls really well and should be ideal for a trip of this duration and distance.

I built a custom bike mount, welded it together this week and attached it to the trailer for the first time in this photo.  Also in the photo is a mock up of where two of the four Pelican 1660 waterproof, lockable cases will be mounted.  These are burly cases that cost about $400 each.  They will house vacuum sealed clothes in some, long term storage for things we will need for 4 season living, as well as things needed for day to day life on the road in others.  The cases will be secured to their place in the trailer by a grid work of wood to hold them in little nooks, and then strapped down with 2″ tie down straps which will be ratcheted together.  They will be placed so that they will be able to be opened from the sides with a channel down the center for additional exterior storage.  A wooden box will be built onto the back for additional storage of things that can be exposed to the elements, such as camp chairs, grill, tents, etc.

The added benefit of using a snowmobile trailer for my cross country road trip is that it can be stripped and used again as a snowmobile trailer when I get there, so, if and when I’m ready to buy a sled, I’ll have the trailer ready to go.
