Our Home, a Chalet in Truckee

We moved in about a week after arriving in Tahoe.  Finding good housing was not an easy task, but after looking at many good options we found one that was warm, comfortable, fully furnished and would not break the bank.  We did not want to spend all of our money on rent, as there is still much gear to buy.   1200$ a month with all utilities included was a sound deal.  We ordered a cord of almond firewood to go along with the cord the landlord provided, as we heat primarily with wood on the cold nights, with electric keeping the base temp up and heating the bedrooms.  A cord of hardwood cost $425, which is about double east coast prices.

The kitchen came equipped with many of the essentials, including a complete calphalon cookware set, cups, plates, and even a brand new toaster.  Lots of little details that were already in place at the house really saved us a lot of time and money from having to purchase them ourselves.

After moving in we decided to stock the house up good.  Focusing on food and disposable items, we headed to Reno about 35 minutes away and picked up a Costco card.  We dropped 450$ at Costco and another 200$ at Trader Joes.  Much of what we bought should last the entire winter and other things an entire year.  Having a fully stocked freezer and cupboards, we are able to spend a lot less at the more expensive stores local to us, focusing on produce and small items here and there as needed.
