Driver Door Handle Repair

By cbatstone, September 17, 2013

At approximately 3:00 AM on Monday 9/16, a bit weary eyed and somewhat belligerent after taking the 11-3AM driving shift, I somehow manged to break the interior driver door handle while stopping for gas and to transfer driving shifts to Amira.  Lovely.

The good part about driving into Chicago at 5 AM is that the streets are empty, we slid right into town with our trailer in tow without encountering any traffic at all.  It was clear on our way out of the city how much of a good decision that had been, as we got stuck for a few hours in very slow moving traffic and construction.

The next day I pulled off the door handle on a city side street in Chicago and found that some of the plastic holding the metal clip that connects the handle lever to the door had broken.  The only repair was replacing the entire interior door panel, or rigging something up.  I found a hardware store and picked up a spool of 10# steel wire and a drill bit for impact drill, which Chris Parsons had kindly given me prior to the trip.

I drilled a few holes on either side of the mechanism and ran the wire across it, to hold it into place.  I secured the wire well with a few loops and twists and reassembled.  Works perfectly.

What do you think?
